Anthony Doerr’s Top 10

Anthony Doerr’s short fiction has won three O. Henry Prizes, The Story Prize, and has been anthologized in The Best American Short Stories. He said: Here’s a list, in no particular order, compiled late at night on a cross-country flight, of stories that left me dazed. For the record, a list like this is wholly idiosyncratic; for me reading is such a private and personal experience, and I firmly believe every reader should light her own way, draw her own map, make her own discoveries.

1."Ship Fever," Andrea Barrett 2."The Dead," James Joyce
3."Pale Horse, Pale Rider," Katherine Anne Porter 4."The Watch," Rick Bass
5."The Ecstasy of Alfred Russel Wallace," Daniel Mason 6."The Ledge," Lawrence Sargent Hall
7."Say Yes," Tobias Wolff 8."Bartleby the Scrivener," Herman Mellville
9."The Ceiling," Kevin Brockmeier 10."The Distance of the Moon," Italo Calvino
